Injury update on Randy Orton

INDIANAPOLIS ? WWE Superstar Randy Orton suffered an injury at SmackDown in Indianapolis that could keep him sidelined for a few weeks, and will prevent him from competing at upcoming WWE live events.

Although the full extent of The Viper?s injury remains to be seen, WWE physician Dr. Michael Sampson examined Orton and updated WWE.com about his condition.

?Randy suffered a herniated disc on the L4-L5 level on the left side, and that?s resulting in pain and weakness down his leg.? Dr. Sampson explained. ?He?s going to need some time off for rehab, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy.?

Sheamus is scheduled to replace The Viper in Street Fights against Wade Barrett at WWE live events this week.

Obama to visit swing state Ohio to talk economy (Reuters)

HONOLULU (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama will visit the political battleground state of Ohio next week, ushering in the 2012 election year with a speech focused on the economy, the White House said on Thursday.

Obama will visit Cleveland on Wednesday, just after he returns from a more than week-long vacation in Hawaii, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

The president had put off his trip to Hawaii to wait for Congress to extend payroll tax cuts expiring at the end of December, which lawmakers eventually agreed to continue for only two months because of disagreements about how to offset their cost.

Efforts to broker a full-year deal for the payroll tax cuts, which the White House has said the middle class needs until the U.S. economy heals, are expected to hang over Washington in early 2012 and may be a major theme of Obama's Cleveland speech.

The Democrat will also seek to deflect attention from the Republican caucuses in Iowa and draw a contrast between Obama's economic vision and those laid out by potential Republican rivals for the White House in the November vote.

Obama's re-election chances are expected to hinge on the state of the U.S. economy and particularly the jobless rate, which at 8.6 percent is several percentage points higher than before the financial crisis that struck just before he took office.

In Hawaii, Obama has been golfing, spending time at the beach with his wife and daughters, and enjoying dinners with friends. The Obamas went to church on Christmas Day, and on Thursday, they visited the Pearl Harbor memorial.

University Offices, Services Announce Christmas Break Hours

The official University Christmas Break is Dec. 26-30, and the University will observe New Year's Day Jan. 2, and Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 16. Here is a list of University offices and services, and their holiday hours of operation.

Academic Calendar:

Jan. 3: School of Medicine classes begin
Jan. 9: School of Law classes begin
Jan. 17: Classes resume

University Residence Halls:

8 p.m., Dec. 20: Halls close* (Students with Tuesday evening finals may stay in the residence halls until noon Wednesday, Dec. 21, only with permission from their hall coordinators.)
9 a.m., Jan. 13: Halls reopen
*Laclede Houses, Apartments, Pruellage Hall and Reinert Hall will remain open during all breaks.

University Meal Plan:

Pions don't want to decay into faster-than-light neutrinos, study finds

When an international collaboration of physicists came up with a result that punched a hole in Einstein's theory of special relativity and couldn't find any mistakes in their work, they asked the world to take a second look at their experiment.

Responding to the call was Ramanath Cowsik, PhD, professor of physics in Arts & Sciences and director of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Online and in the December 24 issue of Physical Review Letters, Cowsik and his collaborators put their finger on what appears to be an insurmountable problem with the experiment.

The OPERA experiment, a collaboration between the CERN physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Gran Sasso, Italy, timed particles called neutrinos traveling through Earth from the physics laboratory CERN to a detector in an underground laboratory in Gran Sasso, a distance of some 730 kilometers, or about 450 miles.

OPERA reported online and in Physics Letters B in September that the neutrinos arrived at Gran Sasso some 60 nanoseconds sooner than they would have arrived if they were traveling at the speed of light in a vacuum.

Neutrinos are thought to have a tiny, but nonzero, mass. According to the theory of special relativity, any particle that has mass may come close to but cannot quite reach the speed of light. So superluminal (faster than light) neutrinos should not exist.

The neutrinos in the experiment were created by slamming speeding protons into a stationary target, producing a pulse of pions ? unstable particles that were magnetically focused into a long tunnel where they decayed in flight into muons and neutrinos.

The muons were stopped at the end of the tunnel, but the neutrinos, which slip through matter like ghosts through walls, passed through the barrier and disappeared in the direction of Gran Sasso.

In their journal article, Cowsik and an international team of collaborators took a close look at the first step of this process. "We have investigated whether pion decays would produce superluminal neutrinos, assuming energy and momentum are conserved," he says.

The OPERA neutrinos had energies of about 17 gigaelectron volts. "They had a lot of energy but very little mass," Cowsik says, "so they should go very fast." The question is whether they went faster than the speed of light.

"We've shown in this paper that if the neutrino that comes out of a pion decay were going faster than the speed of light, the pion lifetime would get longer, and the neutrino would carry a smaller fraction of the energy shared by the neutrino and the muon," Cowsik says.

"What's more," he says, "these difficulties would only increase as the pion energy increases.

"So we are saying that in the present framework of physics, superluminal neutrinos would be difficult to produce," Cowsik explains.

In addition, he says, there's an experimental check on this theoretical conclusion. The creation of neutrinos at CERN is duplicated naturally when cosmic rays hit Earth's atmosphere.

A neutrino observatory called IceCube detects these neutrinos when they collide with other particles generating muons that leave trails of light flashes as they plow into the thick, clear ice of Antarctica.

"IceCube has seen neutrinos with energies 10,000 times higher than those the OPERA experiment is creating," Cowsik says.."Thus, the energies of their parent pions should be correspondingly high. Simple calculations, based on the conservation of energy and momentum, dictate that the lifetimes of those pions should be too long for them ever to decay into superluminal neutrinos.

"But the observation of high-energy neutrinos by IceCube indicates that these high-energy pions do decay according to the standard ideas of physics, generating neutrinos whose speed approaches that of light but never exceeds it.

Cowsik's objection to the OPERA results isn't the only one that has been raised.

Physicists Andrew G. Cohen and Sheldon L. Glashow published a paper in Physical Review Letters in October showing that superluminal neutrinos would rapidly radiate energy in the form of electron-positron pairs.

"We are saying that, given physics as we know it today, it should be hard to produce any neutrinos with superluminal velocities, and Cohen and Glashow are saying that even if you did, they'd quickly radiate away their energy and slow down," Cowsik says.

"I have very high regard for the OPERA experimenters," Cowsik adds. "They got faster-than-light speeds when they analyzed their data in March, but they struggled for months to eliminate possible errors in their experiment before publishing it.

"Not finding any mistakes," Cowsik says, "they had an ethical obligation to publish so that the community could help resolve the difficulty. That's the demanding code physicists live by," he says.

Pions don't want to decay into faster-than-light neutrinos, study finds

When an international collaboration of physicists came up with a result that punched a hole in Einstein's theory of special relativity and couldn't find any mistakes in their work, they asked the world to take a second look at their experiment.

Responding to the call was Ramanath Cowsik, PhD, professor of physics in Arts & Sciences and director of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Online and in the December 24 issue of Physical Review Letters, Cowsik and his collaborators put their finger on what appears to be an insurmountable problem with the experiment.

The OPERA experiment, a collaboration between the CERN physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Gran Sasso, Italy, timed particles called neutrinos traveling through Earth from the physics laboratory CERN to a detector in an underground laboratory in Gran Sasso, a distance of some 730 kilometers, or about 450 miles.

OPERA reported online and in Physics Letters B in September that the neutrinos arrived at Gran Sasso some 60 nanoseconds sooner than they would have arrived if they were traveling at the speed of light in a vacuum.

Neutrinos are thought to have a tiny, but nonzero, mass. According to the theory of special relativity, any particle that has mass may come close to but cannot quite reach the speed of light. So superluminal (faster than light) neutrinos should not exist.

The neutrinos in the experiment were created by slamming speeding protons into a stationary target, producing a pulse of pions ? unstable particles that were magnetically focused into a long tunnel where they decayed in flight into muons and neutrinos.

The muons were stopped at the end of the tunnel, but the neutrinos, which slip through matter like ghosts through walls, passed through the barrier and disappeared in the direction of Gran Sasso.

In their journal article, Cowsik and an international team of collaborators took a close look at the first step of this process. "We have investigated whether pion decays would produce superluminal neutrinos, assuming energy and momentum are conserved," he says.

The OPERA neutrinos had energies of about 17 gigaelectron volts. "They had a lot of energy but very little mass," Cowsik says, "so they should go very fast." The question is whether they went faster than the speed of light.

"We've shown in this paper that if the neutrino that comes out of a pion decay were going faster than the speed of light, the pion lifetime would get longer, and the neutrino would carry a smaller fraction of the energy shared by the neutrino and the muon," Cowsik says.

"What's more," he says, "these difficulties would only increase as the pion energy increases.

"So we are saying that in the present framework of physics, superluminal neutrinos would be difficult to produce," Cowsik explains.

In addition, he says, there's an experimental check on this theoretical conclusion. The creation of neutrinos at CERN is duplicated naturally when cosmic rays hit Earth's atmosphere.

A neutrino observatory called IceCube detects these neutrinos when they collide with other particles generating muons that leave trails of light flashes as they plow into the thick, clear ice of Antarctica.

"IceCube has seen neutrinos with energies 10,000 times higher than those the OPERA experiment is creating," Cowsik says.."Thus, the energies of their parent pions should be correspondingly high. Simple calculations, based on the conservation of energy and momentum, dictate that the lifetimes of those pions should be too long for them ever to decay into superluminal neutrinos.

"But the observation of high-energy neutrinos by IceCube indicates that these high-energy pions do decay according to the standard ideas of physics, generating neutrinos whose speed approaches that of light but never exceeds it.

Cowsik's objection to the OPERA results isn't the only one that has been raised.

Physicists Andrew G. Cohen and Sheldon L. Glashow published a paper in Physical Review Letters in October showing that superluminal neutrinos would rapidly radiate energy in the form of electron-positron pairs.

"We are saying that, given physics as we know it today, it should be hard to produce any neutrinos with superluminal velocities, and Cohen and Glashow are saying that even if you did, they'd quickly radiate away their energy and slow down," Cowsik says.

"I have very high regard for the OPERA experimenters," Cowsik adds. "They got faster-than-light speeds when they analyzed their data in March, but they struggled for months to eliminate possible errors in their experiment before publishing it.

"Not finding any mistakes," Cowsik says, "they had an ethical obligation to publish so that the community could help resolve the difficulty. That's the demanding code physicists live by," he says.

Prejudice comes from a basic human need and way of thinking, new research suggests

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2011) ? Where does prejudice come from? Not from ideology, say the authors of a new paper. Instead, prejudice stems from a deeper psychological need, associated with a particular way of thinking. People who aren't comfortable with ambiguity and want to make quick and firm decisions are also prone to making generalizations about others.

In a new article published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, Arne Roets and Alain Van Hiel of Ghent University in Belgium look at what psychological scientists have learned about prejudice since the 1954 publication of an influential book, The Nature of Prejudice by Gordon Allport.

People who are prejudiced feel a much stronger need to make quick and firm judgments and decisions in order to reduce ambiguity. "Of course, everyone has to make decisions, but some people really hate uncertainty and therefore quickly rely on the most obvious information, often the first information they come across, to reduce it" Roets says. That's also why they favor authorities and social norms which make it easier to make decisions. Then, once they've made up their mind, they stick to it. "If you provide information that contradicts their decision, they just ignore it."

Roets argues that this way of thinking is linked to people's need to categorize the world, often unconsciously. "When we meet someone, we immediately see that person as being male or female, young or old, black or white, without really being aware of this categorization," he says. "Social categories are useful to reduce complexity, but the problem is that we also assign some properties to these categories. This can lead to prejudice and stereotyping."

People who need to make quick judgments will judge a new person based on what they already believe about their category. "The easiest and fastest way to judge is to say, for example, ok, this person is a black man. If you just use your ideas about what black men are generally like, that's an easy way to have an opinion of that person," Roets says. "You say, 'he's part of this group, so he's probably like this.'"

It's virtually impossible to change the basic way that people think. Now for the good news: It's possible to actually also use this way of thinking to reduce people's prejudice. If people who need quick answers meet people from other groups and like them personally, they are likely to use this positive experience to form their views of the whole group. "This is very much about salient positive information taking away the aversion, anxiety, and fear of the unknown," Roets says.

Roets's conclusions suggest that the fundamental source of prejudice is not ideology, but rather a basic human need and way of thinking. "It really makes us think differently about how people become prejudiced or why people are prejudiced," Roets says. "To reduce prejudice, we first have to acknowledge that it often satisfies some basic need to have quick answers and stable knowledge people rely on to make sense of the world."

Berenson barred from leaving Peru (AP)

LIMA, Peru ? Peru's government abused its authority by barring paroled U.S. activist Lori Berenson and her 31-month-old son from leaving the country to spend the holidays in New York City with her family, her lawyer charged Saturday.

"Administratively, you can't block a court order," Anibal Apari said after Berenson told The Associated Press that she and her son Salvador were prevented from boarding a flight Friday night despite being granted permission in court.

"They didn't let me leave and they're putting out this version that I arrived late," she said in a brief phone conversation.

Local media had initially reported, citing unnamed airport officials, that Berenson arrived late for the flight. But video taken by a local TV channel showed her pacing nervously in front the Continental Airlines ticket counter and talking with an agent more than an hour before the flight left.

"An abuse of authority has been committed," Apari told the AP. Apari, who is Salvador's father but is separated from Berenson, blamed the Interior Ministry directly and said no official explanation had been provided.

He said Berenson presented the document issued by the judiciary authorizing her departure to migration officials at the airport but they demanded an additional document they referred to as "an exit order."

"It doesn't exist. They made it up," he said of the purported document.

The Interior Ministry's communications chief, Zully Bismarck, said she was not immediately able to address the issue when reached by the AP on Saturday afternoon.

Berenson, 42, was paroled last year after serving 15 years for aiding the Tupac Amaru leftist rebel group.

Arrested in 1995, the former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student was accused of helping the rebels plan an armed takeover of Congress, an attack that never happened.

A military court convicted her the following year and sentenced her to life in prison for sedition. After the U.S. government pressured Peruvian officials, she was retried in civil courts in 2001 and sentenced to 20 years for terrorist collaboration.

A three-judge appeals court had given her permission to leave the country beginning Friday with the stipulation she return by Jan. 11.

The panel had overturned a lower-court judge's initial refusal in October.

Peru's anti-terrorism prosecutor, Julio Galindo, told the AP he had asked the appeals court Friday to nullify the decision because it violated a law prohibiting paroled prisoners from leaving the country. He said he didn't know whether the court acted on that appeal and Peru's courts spokesman, Guillermo Gonzalez, said he had no information on the matter.

Asked about Berenson's next step, Apari said she had been told to go to the Interior Ministry on Monday.

Berenson's parents, often outspoken on her behalf, did not respond Saturday to phone calls seeking comment.

Some Peruvians consider Berenson a terrorist and have publicly insulted her on the street.

The prosecutor, Galindo, had opposed letting Berenson out of prison before her 20-year sentence for aiding terrorism ends in 2015, saying it would set a bad precedent for the early release of others convicted of terrorism-related crimes.

Mark Berenson, who turns 70 on Dec. 29, told the AP on Friday that his daughter had every intention of returning to Peru.

"As Lori says, if she doesn't come home, let Interpol arrest her," he said.

Peru could seek her extradition and return her to prison if she doesn't come back in the allotted time, Gonzalez said.

On Saturday, Berenson left her apartment around midday to take Salvador for a walk and did not comment to new crews other than to ask them to leave her in peace.

Her journey from prison inmate to parolee has been anguished, and Peruvian news media have repeatedly hounded and mobbed her and frightened young Salvador, said Mark Berenson.

Last month, a local TV channel obtained Berenson's new address and showed video of her home. Her father complained that the act endangered his daughter and said the U.S. Embassy had complained.

Lori "just wants to be a low-profile person and get on with her life and be a good citizen," Berenson said, adding that he planned to appeal to President Ollanta Humala to send his daughter home.

Humala could by law commute his daughter's sentence but has not indicated whether he might do so.

Unrepentant when arrested, Berenson softened during years of sometimes harsh prison conditions, and was eventually praised as a model prisoner. Since her initial parole in May 2010, Berenson repeatedly expressed regret for aiding the rebel group.

Yet many Peruvians see her as a symbol of the 1980-2000 rebel conflict that claimed some 70,000 lives. The fanatical Maoist Shining Path movement did most of the killing; Tupac Amaru was a lesser player.

Berenson has acknowledged helping the rebels rent a safe house, where authorities seized a cache of weapons. But she insists she didn't know guns were being stored there. She denies ever engaging in violence.

In an interview with the AP last year, Berenson said she was deeply troubled at having become Peru's "face of terrorism" and felt she'd become a politically convenient scapegoat.

ECB's Noyer says French downgrade "not justified" (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? A downgrade of France's AAA credit rating would not be justified and ratings agencies are making decisions based more on politics than economics, European Central Bank policymaker Christian Noyer said on Thursday.

Speaking in an interview with local newspaper Le Telegramme de Brest to be published later on Thursday, Noyer also questioned whether the use of ratings agencies to guide investors was still valid.

"In the arguments they (ratings agencies) present, there are more political arguments than economic ones," said Noyer, the head of the Bank of France and a member of the ECB's governing council.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said on Wednesday that decisions by rating agencies were "sometimes subjective and political," and that any loss of France's top-notch AAA rating would be regrettable but not disastrous.

Standard and Poor's is due to decide whether or not to downgrade euro zone countries in the coming days following an EU agreement on Friday to forge tougher fiscal rules.

"The downgrade does not appear to me to be justified when considering economic fundamentals," Noyer said. "Otherwise, they should start by downgrading Britain which has more deficits, as much debt, more inflation, less growth than us and where credit is slumping," he said.

Noyer was also unhappy about critical comments from ratings agencies following last week's EU summit in Brussels. He said such comments had weakened positive sentiment that arose in the markets following the agreement to draft a new treaty for deeper integration in the euro zone.

"Frankly, the agencies have become incomprehensible and irrational. They threaten even when states have taken strong and positive decisions," Noyer said. "One could think that the use of agencies to guide investors is no longer valid."

Ultraviolet rays believed to prevent chickenpox spreading

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Ultraviolet rays help prevent the spread of chickenpox, meaning people in milder climates are more at risk of catching the disease, according to new research. The discovery could lead to new ways of preventing chickenpox and its more severe relative, shingles.

A researcher at St George's, University of London has found that chickenpox is much less common in places with high UV ray levels, compared with those with low levels.

It has long been known that UV rays can inactivate viruses. However, virologist Dr Phil Rice believes his findings indicate that UV rays could inactivate the varicella-zoster virus -- the herpes virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles -- on the skin before it transmits to another person. This explains why there is less transmission in the tropics, where chickenpox is much less frequent than in temperate countries. It would also explain why chickenpox peaks in temperate zones -- where it is seasonal -- in winter and spring, when UV rays are lowest.

Previously, it was thought that geographical differences in chickenpox incidence were related to heat, humidity, population density, or infection with other viruses that protect against it.

Dr Rice examined data from 25 studies on varicella-zoster virus prevalence patterns in both temperate and tropical areas across the globe. He plotted the data against a range of climatic factors, to examine what might be the most likely causes of increased prevalence. The data showed that -- once other factors were ruled out -- UV rays were the only factor to match the infection patterns in each country studied.

Dr Rice, whose study has been published in Virology Journal, said: "No one had considered UV as a factor before, but when I looked at the epidemiological studies they showed a good correlation between global latitude and the presence of the virus.

"One convincing factor of the hypothesis is that there was an explanation for every anomaly. For example, the peak incidence of chickenpox in India and Sri Lanka is during the hot, dry, sunny season. You would expect chickenpox to be at its lowest at this time, so at first this didn't fit the theory. However, this was explained because UV rays are actually much lower in the dry season compared with the monsoon period. In the dry season, the pollution in the atmosphere reflects the UV rays back into space before they reach us. But in monsoon season, the rains wash away the pollution, meaning the UV rays can get through."

Dr Rice also believes his findings show why two distinct genetic types of the virus have formed -- a temperate type and a tropical one. He found that the temperate genotype only transmitted in the tropics when UV radiation was either reduced or negated. It was found to transmit in the home, for example, but not outside. The tropical genotype, however, was found to transmit in the tropics in the presence of UV rays, suggesting it has some resistance. Dr Rice believes this is because the temperate virus line -- which broke off from the original tropical genotype -- has lost the UV resistance still present in the tropical line.

"For the temperate virus line to have lost the selective advantage of resistance to UV rays as it broke off from the original tropical virus, it must have gained an advantage in the virus life cycle as an evolutionary trade off. An obvious advantage would be an ability to reactivate more easily, as shingles. The virus can only have one of these survival advantages, not both. This might explain why shingles appears to be so much less common in people from the tropics, and why the temperate virus reactivates much more readily than the tropical type."

When the existing chickenpox vaccine was created in the 1970s, it was not known that there were two types of the virus. Dr Rice believes his findings could aid the development of new treatments for chickenpox and shingles, which causes considerable pain and discomfort in later life. He says further studies are needed to fully examine the effect of UV rays on the virus.

French state agency predicts recession (AP)

PARIS ? France's state statistics agency is predicting that the country's economy will shrink over this quarter and the next, putting it in recession, as prospects for the whole eurozone worsen.

The Insee agency forecast in a statement late Thursday that the economy would contract 0.2 percent in the fourth quarter and 0.1 percent in the first quarter of 2012. It forecast renewed but weak growth in the second quarter in France, the second-biggest economy in the 17-nation eurozone.

It said it expects the eurozone to experience "a short recessive episode" over the winter.

But it noted an "inhabitual degree of uncertainty" around its forecast because of the volatility on financial markets about the debt crises.

Hawaii coach McMackin retires after 4 seasons (AP)

HONOLULU ? Hawaii coach Greg McMackin retired Monday after a disappointing 6-7 season and missing the postseason for the second time in his four years leading the Warriors.

An emotional McMackin made the announcement at a news conference with dozens of stunned players watching on. He met earlier in the day and Sunday night with athletic director Jim Donovan and Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw to discuss his future.

"Hawaii has meant a lot to my family and me," said McMackin, reading off a brief prepared statement without taking questions. "I have decided to retire from my position at this time. I believe in my players and their potential for success."

Associate coach Rich Miano will serve as interim coach until a replacement is selected. A search committee will be formed to launch a nationwide search for a new coach.

The 62-year-old McMackin just completed the fourth year of his five-year contract that pays him a base pay of $1.1 million annually. He will forego $500,000 owed in his final year, "which I hope will help strengthen the UH football program," he said.

"I want to thank my players, my coaches, the staff and the good people of Hawaii," McMackin said. "I wish you well. Mahalo."

McMackin was 29-25 overall at Hawaii, including 0-2 in bowl games, with one winning season in 2010.

The Warriors lost at home Saturday to Brigham Young, 41-20, finishing one win shy of earning an automatic berth to their hometown Hawaii Bowl.

Coming off a 10-win season and a share of the Western Athletic Conference title, Hawaii began this year favored to win the WAC and with high hopes behind its star quarterback Bryant Moniz. But Hawaii was plagued by inconsistency and injuries.

With each loss, calls for McMackin's ouster grew and attendance at home games plummeted. The season started unraveling when Hawaii was blown out by hapless UNLV by 20 points in the third game of the season where the Warriors were favored by nearly three touchdowns.

There were also unfounded allegations that some players may have been involved in point-shaving.

The university said it received an anonymous letter Nov. 3 accusing unnamed players of intentionally playing poorly to affect the final score as part of a gambling scheme. Honolulu police and the NCAA were notified after the university received the letter, but police have said there isn't enough information for a criminal investigation.

The Warriors were 0-7-1 against the spread in their last eight games.

Donovan said McMackin's decision was voluntary and stressed that the coach was not forced to resign.

"The discussion ended up being that he volunteered to retire. It wasn't tied to any one game or even this particular season per se," Donovan said.

He and Hinshaw thanked McMackin for his service, including improving his student-athlete academic progress rates.

"I respect his decision to retire from this position at this time and understand that he continues to think about the best direction for his team now, as he always has," Hinshaw said. "I am grateful for his many contributions and wish him and his family the very best in their future."

McMackin was known by his players as a caring coach who set high goals academically and on the field. However, he made some gaffs along the way.

In 2009, he was suspended for 30 days without pay and volunteered to take a 7 percent pay cut for making a derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame's chant. A tearful McMackin apologized publically.

McMackin previously served as Hawaii's defensive coordinator under former coach June Jones who left for Southern Methodist shortly after leading the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl in 2007.

Shortly after Jones' departure, Hawaii signed McMackin to a five-year deal that increased his base salary by 10 times to $1.1 million annually, making him the highest paid coach in school history.

McMackin also served three years with the San Francisco 49ers as associate head coach and linebackers coach under Dennis Erickson from 2003-05. He has also served as defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and several college programs including Texas Tech, Miami, Navy, Utah and Idaho.

'Rango,' 'Puss,' 'Tintin' earn Annie nominations (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Johnny Depp's "Rango," Anne Hathaway's "Rio," Antonio Banderas' "Puss in Boots" and Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" are among movies competing for best-animated film at the Annie Awards.

The 10 nominees announced Monday also include James McAvoy's "Arthur Christmas," Owen Wilson's "Cars 2," Jack Black's "Kung Fu Panda 2" and three overseas contenders: "A Cat in Paris," "Arrugas" and "Chico & Rita."

Cast members earning voice-acting nominations for the Annie Awards include "Arthur Christmas" co-stars Bill Nighy and Ashley Jensen, "Kung Fu Panda 2" co-stars Gary Oldman and James Hong and "Puss in Boots" co-star Zach Galifianakis.

Presented by the International Animated Film Society, the Annie Awards will be handed out Feb. 4 at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

DETROIT (AP) ? About three dozen volunteers joined Detroit police officers in a hunt Monday for a 2-year-old girl reported missing by her father, who said she was taken during a carjacking last week.

They left in a cold morning rain from a church not far from where Dandre Lane, 32, told police that daughter Bianca Jones was last seen Friday. Searchers were split into groups of about 10 people and assigned blocks to canvass, looking through fields, alleys, vacant lots and trash cans. They were also asked to speak to people who could be witnesses.

Chief Ralph Godbee said Sunday investigators were questioning the truth of Lane's story, and Lane was in custody on an unrelated warrant. Police also searched his home Monday morning, but declined to provide details.

No suspects have been identified related to the alleged carjacking.

Banika Jones, the girl's mother, said before the search began that she last saw her daughter Nov. 26, when family and friends celebrated her birthday. Jones said Lane had taken Bianca to see a movie, brought her back to her mother's house for the party and then the girl left with her father.

"Please continue to keep searching for Bianca," Banika Jones said. "We love her and we want her home. Bianca, Mommy has lots and lots of gingerbread men for you when you get home."

Makibla Gideon, 39, of Highland Park, was with a group of five women searching. She said she doesn't know the family but felt compelled to participate.

She and her group searched vacant, ramshackle structures, peered in trash bags and bins, and lifted dirty old mattresses.

"You have to put all that aside when it comes to a precious little girl," Gideon said. "If it was my son or me missing, I would want somebody looking for me."
